Raury - ‘Superfly'

When he’s not putting on pumping live shows and buying his fans ice-cream afterwards, rising star Raury is getting his tunes down on record. His debut LP dropped last month, and amongst a few more experimental tracks (including what seems to be a recording of a fight with his mother about his future?) are some real gems. One of them is ‘Superfly’, a summery anthem for carefree lovin’ written in collaboration with Vancouver Sleep Clinic. Between a golden hook and some delicate falsetto work, Raury proves he can actually rap, laying down a rapid-fire verse with an easy flow. It’s an impressively versatile vocal performance, but what’s even better is that the song doesn’t sound caught up in itself - it just gets its point across in 3-and-a-half blissful minutes, like a pop song should. It’s no think piece, but take it as a starting point for your summer playlist.

Ryan Hemsworth - ‘Snow In Newark (ft. Dawn Golden)'

In case you weren’t aware, everybody loves Ryan Hemsworth - including you. How could I not know that I love a person, I hear you ask? That’s none of my business. I don’t know how your dysfunctional emotional processes work. If you’d like evidence, though, see above and below. Up there is the first track from his as-yet-unnamed second studio album - it’s adorable. Like Ryan. Down there is a taste of Hemsworth’s Secret Sounds compilation: ten tracks he digs, yours for free. The songs were collected based on the theme ffb6c1 (the code for the light pink colour of the artwork), and if you listen with that in mind, it makes a lot of sense. Thanks, Ryan. You’re the best.

Hozier - ‘Do I Wanna Know (Arctic Monkeys Cover)'

Covers are always tricky. You don’t want to stray too close to the original, but you don’t want to write a completely different song, either. You want it to sound distinct but recognizable. Moreover, the question will always be ‘is it better than the original?’ when really the question should be ‘does it need to be?’ and the answer should always be ‘nope’. A cover is like your mum’s version of your grandma’s famous lemon slice - it’ll rarely be comparable, but it’ll be made with love and worth a nibble nonetheless. And in the case of Hozier’s rendition of ‘Do I Wanna Know’, mum has come pretty damn close.

The Irish troubadour dropped by the BBC’s Live Lounge to take on the sizzling Arctic Monkeys tune, and laid down something a good few notches more mellow. Lesser men might be tempted to use the word ‘beautiful’. I’ll stick with ‘worth a nibble’.

Beat Connection - ‘Another Go Round'

Keen for a Sunday Sesh but can’t be bothered getting out of the house? I recommend the Beat Connection: a consistently enjoyable musical speakeasy decked out with affable synths and fresh beats. The ever-friendly staff have been working away to bring you something bright and bubbly to quash your thirst for quality tunes, and it’s finally ready. The Cocktail of the Month: ‘Another Go Round’. Tropical flavours dominate, and a healthy shot and a half of sitar gives the mix quite a kick. Lyrically, addiction is the ingredient to watch out for, and it’s fitting: this one will have you coming right back for more. Enjoy responsibly.

TV On The Radio - ‘Happy Idiot'

TV On The Radio are back in a big way. Last year’s delicious rocker ‘Mercy’, and the slower-but-also-tasty 'Million Miles’, were the first releases from the New York legends since 2011’s Nine Types of Light and the subsequent death of their bassist, Gerard Smith. The band have improved steadily with each of their four studio albums, so we can only hold our collective breath and hope that they have worked through these hard times to produce something incredible with Heels, expected in mid-November.

Surprisingly, neither of the two songs above feature on the album’s 12-song track list. One song that does feature, however, is new single ‘Happy Idiot’. A typically sharp beat kicks things off, and a surging guitar line starts to imprint itself onto your brain. By the time that pre-chorus hits, you already know you’re listening to one of the band’s best songs to date: the wild, stuttering...

Bon Iver - ‘Heavenly Father'

Not long ago, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and brother Nate were paid a visit in Wisconsin by one Mary Ramos. Ramos is the music supervisor on Zach Braff’s upcoming film Wish I Was Here - a project financed entirely by a whopping $3 million raised on crowd-funding platform Kickstarter. Braff, being a music enthusiast and having a few quid to spare, has had the luxury of inviting his favourite musicians to contribute to the film’s soundtrack. The brothers were shown an early cut of the film, and Justin got straight to work. The result is the undeniably cinematic and deeply satisfying ‘Heavenly Father’. Check out the song above, and the film’s trailer below. It’s out on September 11 in Oz.

Caribou - ‘Can’t Do Without You (Extended Mix)'

A week ago I posted about Caribou’s triumphant ‘Can’t Do Without You’. Well, he’s just posted a seven-minute extended mix on his Soundcloud page.

If the original knocked your socks off, this will leave you standing naked in the rain wondering if anything will ever feel this good again.

Get into it.

The Drums - ‘Magic Mountain'

So The Drums disappeared for three years, and now they’re back with a completely new sound. Thankfully, they’ve lost the sleepy-eyed stupor of their earlier output. ‘Magic Mountain’ sees them wide awake and in your face. This sharper, fuller sound doesn’t come at the expense of their pop chops, either; the song is still catchy as anything, even if it dwells a little too much on the titular hook. Directing their lyrical escapism to towards a new mythical (psychological?) space rather than the beach which drew them previously, The Drums have obviously spent their time off wisely. They’ve returned more mature and sounding better than ever.

MØ - ‘Walk This Way'

Not an ounce more attitude could possibly fit into MØ’s video for new single ‘Walk This Way’. The Danish singer and her all-girl gang swagger their way through gym class with more pouts and scowls than you can poke a stick at - but all’s well as long as she can back it up, and back it up she does. The music grabs your attention instantly and doesn’t let go, with an infectious beat and vocal hook after vocal hook leading the way. Lyrics like “you’ll never get my posse and I,” while not exactly poetry, are delivered with such easy confidence that they compliment the track’s alluring air of self-assurance.

Debut album No Mythologies To Follow is out now and worth a listen - MØ has proved she can walk the walk as well as talking the talk.

Kevin Drew - ‘You In Your Were (Ft. Feist)’

Kevin Drew - You In Your Were from Arts & Crafts on Vimeo.

After the success of single ‘Good Sex’ and sophomore solo album Darlings earlier this year, you might have thought Kevin Drew would be resting on his laurels - or else, too busy frantically touring to be making frivolous music videos. Not so. Instead, he has recruited Zach Galifianakis as a choreographer and mentor for the light-hearted and hilarious visuals accompanying new single ‘You In Your Were’. Galifianakis’s clueless antics and disapproval of the song’s somewhat obtuse title are comic gold, but the music itself shares the spotlight. Feist makes an appearance, and the chemistry between her and Drew lends the clip yet another attractive twist. The video finds a perfect balance between elements, and was easily the best clip of last month.
